Year 1 really enjoyed looking and talking about the powerpoint on Vocation. They know that vocation is something that you are good at and can do well. We had a big discussion about Confucius and his words and year 1 understand that when you love doing something it doesn’t feel like work.
The children recognised Florence Nightingale straight away as we learned about her life and vocation in the Autumn term and the wonderful work she did to change nursing and improve conditions in our hospitals for the better. This coming Friday 12th is International Nurses Day and is the anniversary of Florence’s birth.
Year 1 all shared their thoughts about what they want to do in the future. Ellis wants to work with animals, Lily wants to be a nurse, Zeb wants to be an inventor, Archie wants to be an ice-cream man, Gracie wants to be an animal nurse, Megan wants to be a teacher, Ollie wants to be a BMX professional and Eva said she would like to be a chef.
In Year 5 we thought about Florence Nightingale and shared what we knew about her.
Edward knew that she was a Nurse in a war. He remembered that at the hospital she worked in, there were lots of rats that spread disease. Charlottle remembered that Florence was born in Italy on May 12th 1920.
We also discussed what our individual vocations might be in the future, these are some of our comments….
Sabian said:
‘I would like to be an engineer for my Dad’s company and maybe become the CEO’.

Chloe C said:

Evie said:
‘In the future I would like to be a Beautician because I love doing new hair styles and I like art.’
Marco said:
‘I would like to be a footballer because I am good at football and it will be fun for my job”.
In Year 4 we have discussed at length the different jobs people can do and children were keen to know how much money you would get paid to do different jobs and what sort of qualifications you would need. We spoke about a vocation being something we enjoy so much it becomes our job and part of our lives.
We discussed who Florence was and said that she was a nurse in the Crimean war and also known as ‘The lady with the lamp’

The children in Foundation thought carefully about what vocation meant and after a few clues they decided it was something that you do. We then talked about how when we are grown up, having a job helped us to buy a home, a car and to pay the bills. We then thought carefully about what Confucius said and I explained that if you do a job that you love time passes quickly and you have lots of fun. I asked the children to think carefully about the types of things they like to do, such as helping others, exploring, creating and building and to then think about what they would like to do as a job when they are older. The children had a wide range of answers:
Sebastian wanted to be an explorer and look for plants and animals and get really close to them, Riley and Nathan would both like to builders (Riley said he would earn lots of money!), Amelia would like to be a hairdresser, Ava would like to be an explorer and round up horses, Luke would like to work in John Lewis, both Haris and Oliver would like to be Police Officers when they grow up, Lee would like to make cakes (so he can eat some of them too!) and Maisie wants to be a shopkeeper.
The children had not seen a picture of Florence Nightingale before and were very impressed that she helped so many.
In Year 2 we talked about the quote from Confucius. We talked about how things are fun and easy when you enjoy doing them. Some people don’t like their jobs because they are boring or hard. We talked about jobs we would LOVE to do when we are older and how these are good goals to have for the future!
Some of the amazing jobs we want to do when older are firefighters, police, artists, footballers, singers, looking after animals and working with animals like elephants and sharks.
We also talked about Florence Nightingale. We learnt about her last year in Year 1 and the soldiers she looked after. She was very brave and hard working. We need to learn lots at school to get good jobs when we are older.
A vocation is a strong feeling about being suitable for a job.
We think it means that if you enjoy work it won’t feel like work.
The woman in the picture is Florence Nightingale. She helped sick people in the war and she raised the importance of having clean hospitals. Its International nurse day tomorrow so that is why we are thinking about her.
Some jobs we want to do when we are older:
– actor
– actress
– performer
– Businessman
– Makeup artist
– Vet
– Work at John Lewis
– Astronaut
– Shop owner (corner shop)
– Shop owner (reptile shop)
Year 3 enjoyed talking about what job they wanted to do when they are older. We decided to create J2E pages about our job, they will be on the Year 3 Pupil blog. Lots of children said they wanted to do something they enjoyed. We talked about how we have to work hard now so that we can achieve our ambition. We also talked about whatever job we choose we will always have to work hard but if it is something that we enjoy it won’t be hard work. Our class is full of would be singers, actors, policemen, archaeologists, footballers and teachers.
