We have had a good fun sorting the fruits and veggies. Alexander sorted them onto two differet plates & named them all. We talked whether they were fruits or veggies and what colour they were. We also counted them all. Regarding the Harvest Festival we have found out that it is a celebration of the food grown on the land.
Ethan enjoyed sorting through the fruit and vegetables we have, Ethan’s favourite vegetable is a red pepper. Harvest Festival reminds Christians of all the good things God gives them.
Matilda and I looked on my phone to read about harvest festival, we learnt that harvest festival is about giving to people who are less fortunate than us.
We went to wedges bakery for lunch today and had some yummy sandwiches! They had lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and the shiniest apples we’ve ever seen!! We looked at all the different types and spoke about whether they grow on trees or in the ground, what colour they were and if they had stones or pips inside. We found:
Red and green apples which grow on trees and have pips inside
Purple plums which also grow on trees and have a stone inside
Lemons which also grow on trees and have pips inside
Potatoes and sweet potatoes which grow in the ground and are a different colour when you peel them
Big red tomatoes (Matilda doesn’t like tomatoes) which grow on a plant and have pips inside them
Olivia found out that the word HARVEST came from an old word ‘Haerfest’. This means ‘autumn’ so we thought that this means harvesting happens in the autumn-time!
Harvest festival fact in scotland its called lammas — loaf mass. showed Libby where scotland is too.
We spoke about all the fruit and veg they help nanny grow and how it can be sorted by colour ,shape & size.
Phoebe named all of the fruit and vegetables. We found that the strawberries were red and have seeds on the outside, the grapes were purple and have seeds on the inside, the pepper was green and has seeds on the inside, the banana was yellow and grows on trees, the apple was red and has seeds on the inside and also grows on trees. The carrot was orange and grows in the ground.
Phoebe found out that Harvest is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday nearest the harvest moon.
We collected some fruits and vegetables together and Elliot decided he would like to sort them by colour. He put the corn and the banana together, the orange and the carrot and the pepper and the apple – both were red with a bit of green and a bit of yellow on them. I then suggested we sort them based on where they grow. Elliot knew that the carrot, onion and sweet potato grew underground and the bananas, apples and oranges grew on trees. We talked a bit about how some fruits, like bananas, only grow on trees in hotter countries, although he remembered seeing some in the glass houses at the botanical gardens! We looked up on the internet how green beans and peppers grow as he wasn’t sure, then he had a great time carefully splitting all the beans open to see what was inside.
Oliver looked at vegetables and fruit telling us what the different colours were, plus if they were a fruit or vegetable. He looked at cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, broccoli and green beans. For fruit he looked at strawberries, grapes, bananas, peaches and apples, telling us all the right colours of the fruit and vegetables. We asked him to look for what had seeds in them and found the seeds in the apple and saw that the strawberries had tiny seeds on them.
Ava loves anything to do with food so had lots of fun talking about all the different fruit and vegetables. I also told her about the Harvest festivals in my old school and the wheat sheaf shaped bread. Ava was very interested to see a picture of one and is looking forward to seeing if they have one at Cheswick Green! She also learnt that the harvest festival is a celebration about being thankful for what we have and gives a chance to help those less fortunate that us.
Matthew was very pleased that the pumpkin/squash we found was orange as its his favourite colour and also a secondary colour! Ella was very happy to see Matthew in the Harvest Festival assembly today and enjoyed listening to the harvest song.
They sang it beautifully too, the children did a great job! Pumpkin is such a lovely shade of orange, and it tastes delicious too 🙂 Well done Matthew.
Dylan sorted the fruit and vegetables into piles but ate rather a lot of the grapes! His favourite fruit is grapes and favourite veggies are broccoli and sprouts. We will email a picture too.

I shall have a look and print one out, sadly my baking skills don’t extend to wheat sheaf shaped bread! Great work Ava 🙂
