Wood is smooth and bumpy
Metal is hard and magnetic
Glass is sharp
Plastic is stretchy
Fabric is woolly
I am writing about Galileo. He was born in Italy in 1564 and he died in 1642.
He invented a telescope to look up in the sky and found that the earth goes around the sun.
He helped people look at whats happening outside the earth.
Wood is bumpy and comes from trees. Glass is delicate, plastic feels hard and is man made. Metal is harder than plastic.
Sir Isaac Newton is a famous scientist, he discovered gravity while he watched a falling Apple! Understanding about gravity helps us to know how to build things that are stable.
My brothers favourite scientists are Albert Einstein, who developed the general theory of relativity, and Stephen Hawking who’s book he is currently reading a brief history of time, which he tells me is about black holes and the time continuum. I listen to Tyler talk about famous scientists all the time as he loves science.
I love learning how things are made for example how a computer is put together or a building constructed, we talk about what makes a window for example plastic for the frame and glass for the window, the plastic holds the glass in place and the window keeps the cold weather out but still allows us to see through.
Me and my mommy just did a quick experiment to learn about properties of different materials. With wood you can’t see through it, but you can with glass. Metal feels hard but material feels soft.
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. It is an amazing invention as it means you can keep in touch with people far away-like my friend Molly.
The inventors of the first aeroplane were Orville and Wilbur Wright. On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers made the first successful experiment in which a machine took off using it’s own power, carrying a person and then landed without crashing. People can get to lots of different countries now, faster than before. All different types of materials are used to make an aeroplane.
Alexander found out about another famous Alexander. He was Scottish and in 1928 he discovered penicillin. His name was Alexander Fleming. When we are poorly and have to go to the doctor, the doctor may say that penicillin will make you better. Alex’s Mummy is allergic to penicillin, when she was four years old the doctor gave her some and it made her more poorly.
Metal is hard and shiny, unless it has gone rusty. It is very strong and can be used for knives and forks and tools and machines. Wood is used for making wooden boxes and wooden spoons and doors and picture frames. It comes from trees the outside of a tree is bark, It feels rough. Glass can be made from sand. It is used for making windows, which we can look through. Alex has lots of toys made from plastic, it is strong and can be different colours and it is not see through like glass.

Year 1!
Your information about the different Scientists is AMAZING! You have learnt so much. I am glad you all like Science so much 😀
