We have had lots of fun today, dancing like dragons and listening to Chinese music. Ladybirds are cooking tomorrow so they will get to make and taste the egg fried rice. Do you think Caleb will like it?
My Grandma and Grandad have been to China and Grandma has sorted out some things for me to bring to school. There is some money, leaflets and a hat. The hat is called a coolie hat and the farmers wear them to keep the sun off them whilst they work. I like the leaflet with the picture of the train on as it is a really fast train. Their houses look different to ours as they have a very pointed roof. Mommy has been to Hong Kong and visited a Buddhist temple and also a place called monkey mountain where the monkeys are very confident and try to steal your food.
Daddy showed Sebastian how a tea ceremony is performed on you tube, he learnt that the cups are cleansed with boiling water before the tea is put in. He also noticed that their cups do not have handles. Sebastian then drew the Chinese flag and now remembers that it is red with gold stars. He then watched the traditional dragon dance on TV and said he wanted to see one so we we took him into Birmingham Sunday to see the Chinese celebrate their new year & saw dancing Lions & Dragons. He likes that it is the year of the Monkey as His nickname is Monkey!
This week Oliver and his family went into Birmingham on the train, to visit China Town and see the Chinese New Year celebrations. We saw lots of people gathered to watch singing, dancing Chinese dragons and a display of kung fu. We heard fire crackers too. We then went to a chinese restaurant and had some chinese food. We had egg fried rice and tried using chopsticks. Oliver particularly liked the BBQ chicken (ribs!). We bought a (plastic) gold chinese lantern ornament for good luck. We all had a fabulous time and we even bumped into a friend that Oliver had made down in Cornwall over Christmas time! (Rio) What a brilliant challenge.
Milly learnt about how the years were named after animals. She also made a red envelope which children are traditionally given during Chinese New Year containing money. She decorated it with Chinese characters for luck and happiness.
Ava has loved learning about China and Chinese traditions. We improvised chopsticks using straws and had a tea ceremony with raspberries! She also leant where China is on a map and how far it is from England. Tonight we ordered some Chinese food – her favourite being ‘Chinese spaghetti’ (also know as chicken chow mein!)
caleb was born in the rabbit. caleb is looking forward to it soon.

That sounds like an adventure! Perhaps Mrs Little would like to talk to the children about it tomorrow?
