I hope Foundation have a look at our Mini Beast Mansion in the Woods behind the little play ground, there you will be able to find lots and lots of cool creepy crawlies. Also have a look along the fence opposite Year 2’s classroom. Lots of woodpile’s that Forest Schools have created that bugs love to hide in and under. π
Yesterday we had a ladybird on the windscreen of the Car so I didn’t have to go too far to find any bugs! Ross went with his dad on a mini beast hunt in the park and found ants, flies and a slug. According to Ross there was also a glowing thing but we have no idea what it was, lol! When they got home they went on a hunt in the garden and moved some large rockery stones and found a frog and what looked like frogspawn (although I think it’s the wrong time of the year for that). In our garden they also found a snail and some spiders.
Isla found a spider and a centipede under the leaves – it was all curled up and we have a picture of it we would like to send in – where shall we email it?
Brilliant minibeast hunting Isla you can send your picture to the school office at: office@cheswick-green.solihull.sch.uk
we look forward to seeing it π
Myself and Harvey went on our search for minibeasts in the mulch…!We found three ladybirds, a little green caterpillar and a tiny slug!!We found these by turning over the leaves in our back garden!
We went to Hay Woods on our mini beast hunt. Zachary enjoyed looking under leaves and turning over logs to see what we could find underneath. We were careful to put things back as we found them afterwards so we didn’t break the creatures homes. We saw: spiders; spiders egg sacs; loads of woodlice; centipedes; a worm; 2 beetles; an ant (just the 1 acording to Zachary); little flies; a daddy long legs. We also saw a dead headless pheasant which prompted Zachary ro come up with theories on how it met it’s demise. After considering whether it was one of our cats (too far for them to travel), a wolf (fortunately not native to the West Midlands), he concluded it was probably a fox.
Wow, a very interesting bug hunt in the leaf mulch! I’m really pleased you were so careful at putting the leaves and twigs back, it sounds like the perfect cosy home for minibeasts.
Ben went to Blenheim Palace on Saturday and spent time with Grandpa and Granny turning the leaves over and looking for bugs. We found an ant, a spider, a caterpillar and a jumping bug. We found some rolled up leaves but nothing seemed to be hiding in them. Ben then got distracted by about 8 pheasants that he ran off to chase and seemed to lose interest in the bugs!
This afternoon I went out in the garden with Emily and Daddy. We found 3 mini-beasts. These were….. A little slug, a wax worm (which will turn into a moth) and a small spider. I found these mini-beasts by digging up some mud. Daddy took some pictures of them. Finding the mini-beasts was fun.
Megan and I went searching for minibeasts in the sunshine today and found several things. We found some baby worms under a flower pot, a snail amongst some flowers and a spider on a huge web that it had made. It sparkled in the sunshine.
Megan loved peeping under the leaves and we talked a lot about autumn as she found acorns and conkers as well as a wood louse. She picked up leaves and talked about the various colours, she then did lots of gluing and colouring to make pictures including some of the things she saw (she plans to bring them to show her teachers).
Daniel had a good look in the garden and around cheswick (under the conker trees so we could collect those at the same time!), and found lots of mini beasts. Slugs, ladybirds, centipede , spiders, wood louse and a few unknown bugs too! We have made a note and drawn some pics in his tree fu tom notebook which will be in his book bag this week.
My brother and I looked for mini beasts in the garden under all the leaves that have fallen off the tree. We found a range of little creatures from spiders to snails!!
Adam really loved this task (and worryingly so did his dad) . Adam lifted plants pots and moved leaves and found an earwig, spider, worm and a tiny frog. He has drawn them for you and had a go at writing what they are. (Will be in his wallet on monday morning)
I love minibeasts! I like to point out spiders to mummy which she doesn’t like! Daddy and I found a very odd looking spider on the weekend and took a photo of it! I look forward to showing you tomorrow.
We went on a bug hunt at Brueton park in the woods. We looked under logs and found lots of interesting things. Wood lice, slugs, centipedes and spiders. We saw something we think was a newt but we weren’t sure, Alex has a photo of it he will bring in tomorrow. When we got home we drew some pictures of the things we had seen and stuck some photos on as well. Alex is looking forward to showing his friends when he brings it into school tomorrow.
Aaliyah really enjoyed hunting for minibeasts. During the weekend we visited a local trail and looked under leaves and large stones we found a spider and a worm . Nanna Pauline also helped us to find a slug and woodlice under plant pots in her back garden.
We have lots of photos to send in and share with the rest of the class.
Isla and I went to Brueton Park on Sunday. We did lots of digging amongst the leaves and saw earwigs, spiders and beetles. We were there for a birthday party so we also built a fairy house in the woods! Yesterday we lifted up the big pots we have outside our house and saw lots of earwigs and a centipede underneath them – Daddy had told us that creatures often reside there!
As it’s been raining most of this week, we’ve not had much chance to go outside! Aimee and I have talked about the different types of bugs that could be found underneath leaves. Aimee suggested snails, slimey slugs, ants… There were another few silly suggestions such as biscuits and ducks (!). We also talked about the different colour leaves in Autumn, such as brown, orange, yellow, red and maybe pink.
Maybe the weather will be better this weekendβ¦.fingers crossed! Well done Aimee, you thought carefully about what might be hiding in those beautiful autumn leaves. Maybe you could check whatβs hiding in the mulch this weekend if it is nice and dry π

That sounds perfect, thank you James!
Haydn had great fun on his mini beast hunt. He found lots of bugs and enjoyed looking at them closely.
Super, we look forward to finding out what you found in the mulch Haydn!

Excellent bug hunting Ross, you looked carefully in two different places. I wonder what the glowing creature could be? Answers on a postcard please!

Excellent work Harvey! I wonder if the ladybirds were a family?
My sister helped me to find a slug, worm and spider in leaves at Brueton Park
Well done Hannah and Madison! It’s amazing what you can find when you look carefully… π
