  1. Foundation says:

The children are very excited to hear that there will be an Advent window hunt, especially as they may win a toy voucher! In Foundation 2 some children will be having chocolate advent calendars, with different characters on the front. We talked about what we are counting down to…Christmas! The children remembered who’s birthday it is on Christmas day too.

  2. Year 5 says:

We discussed what is happening in Cheswick Green this year to celebrate Advent leading up to Christmas. Over Decmeber, different houses and shops will be decorating their windows with a theme of a christmas carol. In the corner of their windows, there might be a clue to help us work out which carol it is about. There is going to be a prize for whoever gets the most songs correct.

    What is philanthropy?
It is when you donate your time or money to a good cause or to disadvanted people or parts of the world. For example Children In Need and The Princes Trust.

What have Bill and Melinda Gates done?
They have created a charity called The Giving Pledge where wealthy people give more than half of their money to disadvantaged people. Since 1994 they have given 30 billion.

We think that Andrew Carnegie means that if you have a lot of money and you don’t share it with people who need it then it is greedy and unkind. Anyone who has a lot of money should share this with others who need it in order to help them.

How much money do you think you need before it is of no use?
We think that you need enough so that you can pay for your bills, food, water etc. We think that you would have too much money if you begin to waste it on things you don’t need. There may be other people that would need basic things and would benfit from some extra support.

  3. Year 1 says:

Year 0ne enjoyed Reverend Vicki’s assembly. We will be talking about Advent a little more in our classroom this week. They were excited to hear about what is happening in Cheswick Green in the lead up to Christmas. They know that different houses and shops will be decorating their windows with a focus on a Christmas carol. It will be like a treasure hunt looking for clues with a prize at the end of it for the winners. In their homes they have advent calendars with chocolate treats ready to begin the countdown. We talked about candles sometimes being used to countdown each day. The children also know that we celebrate Christmas to remember Jesus’s birthday.

  4. Year 2 says:

Year 2 were able to talk about Advent today and we talked about our chocolate Advent calendars that we have at home and how it helps us countdown to Christmas. Year 1 and Year 2 are performing their Nativities next week and this year it’s called ‘Countdown to Christmas’ and there is an Advent calendar in our performance!
Some children start their countdown to Christmas with their Christmas tree being put up on the 1st of December. Some children have calendars in their kitchens at home and cross off each day.
We know there are 4 weeks left until Christmas now so a lot of us in Year 2 are very excited.
Thank you to Reverend Vicki for her assembly yesterday, Year 2 enjoyed it!!

  5. Year 4 says:

Year 4 spoke at length about Philanthopy. We tried to imagine how many people each year were dying or paralysed by diseases and how much of an impact the money give by the Gates family would make.

We thought of all the things we could buy with the money that the Gates family have and agreed that after a few years, there would be nothing left to buy and money wouldn’t have as much value. Therefore spending money in order to help others would give you a brilliant feeling which you might not otherwise get. Knowing that the Gates have saved so many real lives is far more rewarding that buying the latest trainers or phone! We spoke about how having less can make you appreciate more and how looking forward to a special gift at Birthdays or Christmas makes the gift so much more special than if you just bought whatever you wanted all the time.

Mrs Arnold spoke about a program on TV where rich people swap lives with poorer people and how the rich people always seem to realise that by living in a smaller house, they are closer together as a family and talk more. They also appreciate the value of money more. The poorer people always feel inspired to make sure their children have a good education so they can earn more. We linked this to our jigsaw lesson a while ago and how some people don’t have the right to an education so we should use our gift of education wisely.

We think that Andrew Carnegie means that if you have a lot of money and you don’t share it, or share you time or knowledge then you may be viewed as selfish. We spoke about the fact that lots of rich people who run business give higher education opportunities to others in order to give back as well as donate some of their money or time to helping others.

Finally we reflected on our own lives. Many of us agreed that we would like enough money to be comfortable but not too much money so that it impacts on our family lives or relationships. Oliver Parry said that the smaller the house, the cosier it is and we all agreed.

  6. Year 6 says:

    ADVENT

Special things we do to celebrate advent:
    -Christmas lights
-Add a bauble to the tree each day
    -Advent calendar

In Cheswick Green this year, we are going to put nice drawings on windows each day until loads of house have drawings on the windows.

    PHILANTHROPY

It is process when people give up their time or give money to help others.

Bill and Melinda Gates have convinced other wealthy people to donate half their wealth to help people in need. They also donated 3.6 billion pounds to charity this summer. They have donated 30 billion since 1994. They also run the largest private charity in the world.

We think money becomes no use when you get so much that you have no ambition because you already have everything and when your family are ill and you would trade all your money to make them better.

  7. Year 3 says:

In year 3, we had a big discussion on philanthropy. Some of us were very inspired by the work of Bill and Melinda Gates. We discussed how much money we would need to buy everything we would ever need. Then we discussed what we would do if we had more than that amount.
Bill and Melinda Gates have donated more than half of their money to charity, but they still have enough left for a big mansion with a swimming pool! They have also convinced other wealthy people to do the same.
Will.I.Am is also good at philanthropy because he donates all the money he makes on The Voice to charity.
We also discussed as a class that you don’t have to be a millionaire to help charities. You can give up your time or donate a small amount of money if that is all you have to spare.
