Year one know that the phrase ‘one good turn deserves another’ means that if somebody does something kind or helps you, it is nice to be able to do something to help them in return for their kindness.
Jack said his brother Harry had looked after him in the park. Keeleigh said her brother had looked after her when she fell over. Jacob s brother Joshua had helped him at the swimming pool when he was learning to swim. Lily said her Mum had helped her when she got stuck with her homework. Mrs Rooke said that she had received help from Mrs Parker when she got stuck on the computer.
This week year 1 are going to help do jobs at home. Isla is going to set the table. Alice is going to vacuum. Anaya is going to tidy her cupboards. Freya is going to help her friends at school and play with them. Archie is going to help jack if he gets stuck with his work.
Year 1 said that doctors and nurses, the police and firefighters dedicate their lives to help others. Mrs Rooke has been helping and running Rainbows for 30 years. The children thought that was great and couldn’t believe it!
Year 1 know the story of ‘the Lion and the Mouse’ and know that it was surprising that the little mouse could help the fierce lion by freeing him from the trap. He was able to repay the Lion’s kindness because he saved him and did not eat him. In return the mouse was able to free the lion from the trap. Year 1 loved this story and said the message was an important one that we could all learn from.
The children listened attentitively to the story of the Mouse and the Lion and they predicted that the Mouse would chew through the rope to save the lion. We talked about the moral of the story ‘one good turn deserves another’. The children thought carefully about the kind things that their friends or family do for them and some of them thought about what they did in return, the children also gave examples of kind things that they did.
Zunnurain said that hist brother gave him two lollies and he decided to share one of them.
Maisie said that Hattie is kind because she plays with her all the time.
Oscar told us that he and Luke like to play together and they both share toys.
Sophie told us about the time she helped her little brother when he hurt his foot.
Toby then told us about the time that he helped his little sister when she hurt herself on the slide.
Ava shared that her little sister is now on the move and she stopped her from climbing.
Ellie shared that Ava had helped her at lunch time when she had hurt herself.
Harry was happy because Freddie plays tag with him everyday.
Lee told us about the time that he shared cake with his sister.
What a lot of kindness and thoughtfulness, what a super team we have in Foundation!
Year 5 and 6 talked about what it means to give to others and we decided that the most important thing that we can give to people is our time. We thought this as it often makes us feel good when people give us their time especially as it is so precious. Miriam had a great example of her dad making time to play games with her after school.
We also thought about the saying ‘One good turn deserves another.’ we thought that it could have many different meanings but our favourites are- Miriam’s- that we do good things for others they should do good things back. We also mentioned that the good thing doesn’t necessarily need to be given back to the same person. We talked about the benefits of ‘Paying it forward’ which would enable us to spread giving and good things.
Year 5 and 6 made a huge list of people that dedicated their lives to helping people:
Ghandi
Nelson Mandela
Mother Theresa
Florence Nightingale
Martin Luther King
Rosa Parkes
We enjoyed the story of the Lion and the Mouse. We know that helping others is very important even if the person seems ungrateful or not very nice. The children in Year 2 were able to give very good examples of how they help each other, their brothers and sisters and also other friends in clubs and on the weekends. Miss Payne told us about Mother Theresa and about her trip to India and how there were lots of people and children who needed help such as a few clothes, something to drink and something to eat. It’s amazing that some children have never lived in a house! Some children in Year 2 want to visit other countries one day to help other people. Miss Payne told us how the Buddhist believers must give to others and look out for other people as part of their religion. Some children in Year 2 were happy to share their own personal beliefs about how others should be treated. Always treat others how you want to be treated.
In year 4 we have talked how one turn deserves another, and that we can all help out each other from one time to another.
We have all thought about how we have had someone be kind to us this week, Phoebe said that her Mum had treated her to a McDonalds, Jacob S said that his Mum gives him compliments all the time, Daniel M said that his Mom and Dad treated him out for a meal as his brother was at Condover and Mia said that when I was ill my sister bought me an ice cream.
We talked about how there are lots of people who dedicated their lives to helping others such as Jacob Shields’ Grandad – He sacrificed his chance to live as he gave a liver that was offered to him to a small child. Hospital staff such as doctors, nurses and paramedics. War veterans who gave up their lives. Teaching staff helping children and young people get an education.
The story of the lion and the mouse reminds us of helping one another. No matter how big or small you are, you can always help somehow!
Year 3 enjoyed the story of The Lion and The Mouse again and remembered how the mouse helped the lion. The children talked about how important it is to help others at home and school. Sometimes our families help us without us realising it. Our families care and protect us. The children talked about how they helped their parents in lots of ways by helping in the kitchen, setting the table, cleaning our bedroom. The most important way of helping our parents is to behave and do as our parents say. ‘One good turn deserves another’ means that if we help others then others will help us. The lion helped the mouse and then the mouse helped him in return.
