The people in the photos are the leaders in our country. The lady is Teresa May and she is the Prime Minister. The other man is the leader of the Labour Party. They both work in the government and make decisions about our country.
Democracy is important because it means we get to make decisions about our own country. Isla says it wouldn’t be fair if just one person got to make all the decisions. William says it wouldn’t be fair if we didn’t have a democracy because the person could be bossy and always tell us what to do. Aaliyah says it’s nice to have choices. Jaedene says it’s also important to remember God because he will look after us too.
In Year 2 we talked about showing respect to our neighbours, family, brothers and sisters, teachers and our friends at school. We said that sometimes showing respect to our neighbours is hard because they can be rude, or throw rubbish or just be annoying. We can be better people by ignoring bad behaviour and rudeness. We can set a good example by not doing these things and throwing rubbish in people’s gardens. At school Elodie shows respect by letting people join in her games and includes them, Aimee shows respect by helping anyone who falls over. This week in Year 2 we are going to work on respecting people by LISTENING POLITELY while others are speaking.
Year 1 said that democracy is about a group of people who we vote for and they rule our country making laws to help to keep everyone safe. All the children recognised Theresa May and knew that she was our Prime Minister and is in charge of our country and the government. The children remembered Jeremy and were reminded about his surname Corbyn and knew that he heads the Labour party.
We talked about tolerance and respect and reminded ourselves what the meanings of these words were. At home we help our Mums (Alice), speak kindly to others (IslaB), use our manners (Georgia) and do as we are told (Ava).
At school we do good listening (Adah), behave sensibly (Anaya), are kind to our friends (IslaG), work as a team (Jacob) and help and share with others (Oliver). Showing respect and tolerance is important so that we all work well and play well together.
We had a super discussion about the meaning of democracy and why it was a good thing. The children like it when things are fair. In Foundation the children did not know who the people were in the pictures, so we had a chat about who they were and what their jobs were.
At school we show respect by looking after our classroom and our toys. We know that we need to share and look after them so that we can all play with them for a long time. We all continue to learn how to show tolerance and understanding of each other, Mrs Turner needed to give an example and we chose a good solution!
In Year 4 we discussed democracy and decided that we think it is where the government lets grown ups choose how the country is run. We feel lucky that adults get to vote. It is important because people might not agree and it means that whatever we choose is done and we get to agree it. With democracy its very fair and we get to live the way we want to live.
We think respect is treating ALL people in the way that you would want to be treated. For example you might help a friend up if they have fallen over. Taking turns is good, being polite to everyone and allowing people to speak before you speak are also good ways to show respect.
We decided that it is difficult to be tolerant all the time but we could think of lots of examples. Here are a few…
If someone is annoying you, take a deep breath.
Treat everyone the same even if they are not your best friend.
If someone keeps interrupting you when you are working you have to be tolerant.
