In Foundation we talked about what happiness is and the children were asked what makes them feel happy. They thought carefully about their individual responses:
Scarlett: When a friend plays with me.
Myrtle: Going to Granny’s because sometimes we stay over and go somewhere nice.
Ava: When I play with Oscar and we chat for a really long time.
Riley: When my brother tidies up really quickly.
Imogen: When I go to weddings, I was a bridesmaid.
Freddie: When Mummy Kisses me.
Luke: Cuddling my teddy.
Oliver: Going on the circle slide at the park.
Year 1 thought that the picture shows happiness being something that we can share with others. If we are happy then we can help other people to be happy too.
The pig was happy in the story as he always remained positive. He was fed up of his friends being grumpy so he decided to make his friends happy by passing on his happiness and positivity to his friends.
Year 1 had lots of ideas about how they could make others happy.

The people we talked about Bill Gates, Thomas Edison and JK Rowling all failed with their attempts to do things but each of them persevered and kept on going until they were successful. They showed resilience and we talked about how we show resilience when things don’t go right for us straight away.
Ollie knew this symbol meant ying and yang. We talked about knowing how happiness feels and how unhappiness feels.
We talked about the St Patrick’s Day parade in Birmingham as some children had seen it on the news. They knew St Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland.
In Year 4 we talked about perspective and how this is the key to happiness. We talked about what makes us all happy. The pig is happy because he is the ‘Pig of Happiness’ and he makes other people happy – he spreads it.
We looked at all the people in history who have failed and thought about how they viewed their failure. We thought that we are actually a very resilient class.
We spoke about rivers and sun beams also being metaphors for happiness and thought that without sadness, we wouldn’t feel the happiness as much. We thought about the fact that funerals start sad but end up with a happy celebration of life. The symbol is ying and yang, it represnets the happy and sad like at a funeral.
The gentleman is St Patrick. We spokje about how he left Ireland and picked the Shamrock to represnt the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
In year 2 we said that the word happiness is being gently held because it is so special and important. We discussed times when we have felt happy. We said that sometimes we have to go through difficult times or challenges to enjoy feelings of happiness. Life is like a mountain because sometimes we have to get through some tough times but we also experience happier times ( like being at the top of the mountain).
The ying and yang is a symbol of good and bad and a reminder that we appreciate happiness because of the more difficult times that we experience.
We think happiness is when you feel good and are pleased with things in your life.
Things that make us happy are:
– Playing on the computer.
-Looking at goats.
– Sports.
– When we make other people happy.
– Spending time with friends and family.
– Eating nice food.
We think we can make people happy by:
– Smiling at them.
– Caring about them e.g. giving them food.
– Being polite e.g. opening doors for people.
– Giving compliments to people.

-smile and be polite
– help others around us
-do as we are told by family and people we know
– try our best and be positive
– show respect and good manners
-share our toys with our friends
We thought the picture showed us how important happiness is because of how they are holding it with care and two hands.
