Things we learnt about appreciation:
-To appreciate that we are all different.
-To appreciate what we have because some people don’t even have clean water to drink.
-Winning isn’t just having a trophey, it’s being proud of yourself even if you didn’t win.
We think that we don’t show appreciation enough but we are going to make an effort to appreciate things more.
Today is Tuesday! In Year 2 today we had Mrs Carr visit us who is a nurse. SHe made us do lots of maths like she does when she is at work. We had to add up patients, tablets and read measurements on a thermometer! Mrs Carr has to do a LOT of maths in her job. This afternoon we met a police officer who talked to us about maths too! It’s amazing how many jobs use maths every day! Some of our parents do jobs with lots of maths too!!
The rest of this week was SCIENCE WEEK!! It was fun. We learnt about Robert Hooke in Year 2. We read about his life and his inventions – especially the mircoscope! We tried drawing very, very tiny things just like he did. We also learnt about plant and animals cells which are so small you can’t see them just with your eyes!
A few of us did Science projects too at home with our mum and dads. Check out our BLOG on the Year 2 page to see some of our amazing projects. Our topic this year was ‘Changes’. Some of us did colour changes, animal changes, chemical changes. WE LOVE DOING PROJECTS!
In circle time on Friday we are going to talk about who we appreciate in our lives. We are also going to talk about HOW we can show appreciation to others.
In Foundation we encourgae and praise each other with special claps. The children love to do them all, we have a ‘fantastic’, a ‘marshmallow’, a ‘pat on the back’ and a ‘rocket clap’. We are kind to our friends, teachers and families and we make them pictures. We also share the toys and play co-operativley together in the classroom. we are great at showing appreciation in Foundation!
We loved learning about the new holiday on a rocket, or Lunar Tourism! Just like the inventor, Elon Musk, we never give up, and we keep on trying. We also know that if we can’t do something, we can’t do it yet and our teachers, parents and friends will help us to learn the new skill over time.
We would like to say a big thank you to our special visitors today. We practised lots of number skills like adding and taking away as well as counting in tens and twos. We love Maths!
Year 1 enjoyed the assembly and know that it is important to appreciate our families, friends and teachers. We talked about how the words thank you make you feel happy and that it is good to be appreciated. At our parent share today the children were keen to look after their visitors and we talked about if they did a good job and were appreciated a thank you would be a lovely reward. The children were lucky enough to receive tips for their good service and year 1 are going to choose some new activities/equipment to buy for our classroom.
We loved Mrs Carr’s visit and know how important maths is in her job as a nurse. She uses maths to read thermometers, take temperatures, count out tablets, tell the time, to add, subtract and multiply to work out patient scores that tell her how well or poorly they are. We know that it is important to work hard and do our best at school so we can get good jobs.
We used lots of maths today weighing and measuring in the kitchen and cutting our cucumber sandwiches into halves and quarters, making repeating patterns on our homemade flowers and working out how many visitors on each table at the tea.
Lots of year 1 children brought in Science projects to share and they are amazing!
This week we are learning all about Materials and their properties and doing lots of exciting investigations. Miss Hadley also told us about a scientist called Alexander Graham Bell who invented the telephone.
Year 5 have been working on their appreciation skills all year. They are working on many different areas of appreciation and are now especially good at giving compliments to other pupil sand staff when they have been successful in a task or a lesson.
We can be even more appreciative by:
Using good manners ,being friendly and kind- Charlie, Maddie and Oliver
being gracious- Marco
being a good sportsman- Harry
We also were amazed by the visitors who came to school to talk about the world of work and how maths is a part of their job. We were really surprised by:
Freddie was surprised by all the different aspects of maths that go into a job.
Mehreen- was surprised that every job we learnt about included maths.
Ines was surprised by how many different jobs used maths all over the world.
We wanted to find out more about:
Barnaby said he’d like to find out more about how data is used in maths.
Marco wanted to find out more about how the people who visited remembered all of their mathematics skills.
Edwards how people use maths to build things.
Stanley would find out how maths and science can be used together to make things.
We also were excited by Science week this week to celebrate we have made science projects.
Year 3 talked about how we must appreciate all the things people do for us in our lives. Take a moment to think about what our parents do for us in the morning before we come into school:
Make sure we wake up in time for school.
The water is warm for us to have a wash.
Make sure our uniform is clean and ready to wear for school.
Make breakfast and then wash up.
Make sure we have our bag ready for school.
Bring us to school.
What did we do for our parents this morning to show we appreciate them?
This week on Tuesday was our Maths World of Work day, there were lots of visitors who came into school to talk about how they used maths in their jobs. This made us think about why it is so important to work hard and listen in maths. We also celebrated Science Week, some of us did a science project to share with the class. All the children enjoyed talking about their projects.
We have so much to appreciate! Here are some of the things that Year 4 appreciate:
-our parents and families
-our homes and pets
-our school and teachers
-having great friends,
-having books to read & being able to read
-people’s differences
The class agreed that as they are growing older, they are getting better at saying “thank you” and appreciating others.
Year 4 loved having lots of visitors in school on Maths Day. We really enjoyed hearing how adults need to use Maths in their jobs everyday. It was interesting hearing all about the different types of jobs that exist and has given us a better understanding of why working hard at school is so important.
As part of Science Week we increased our interest in Science and improved our research skills learning about a famous Scientist. We really enjoyed learning from each others Science projects too.
