Milly knew that Fairtrade was about the special sticker that she had seen on the bananas in the supermarket. Jacob knew a
that Fairtrade was about farmers growing foods. Year 1 watched and listened to the powerpoint and were interested in learning about what Fairtrade means. Adah remembered it was about farmers being paid a fair price for the food that they grow.
Alice said that Shrove Tuesday was when we make pancakes and use up all the rich foods in our cupboards ready for Lent. Connor remembered that Ash Wednesday follows Shrove Tuesday and that giving up something was a good think to help us appreciate what we do have. Ellis said he would give up coke, James said he would give up sweets, Georgia said she would stop drinking coke, Hannah said she would stop eating chocolate cake, Demi said she would stop eating unhealthy food and Lily said she would give up chewing gum.
Year 1 now know that on March 1st we celebrate St.David’s day and that there are lots of celebrations and parties in wales.
It will be World Book day on Thursday and we are all looking forward to dressing up as our favourite characters and sharing lots of brilliant books.
In Foundation we talked about Pancake Day/Shrove Tuesday and that we put the sweet toppings on our pancakes to use up the food that we may try to give up during lent. The children enjoyed talking about honey and sugar! Chloe and Zunnurain thought that they may give up biscuits and Amelia said that she would give up pancakes. Mrs Turner said that she wouldn’t give up any unhealthy food (because she doesn’t eat it!) but that she would practice a bit of yoga every day instead.
In Year 2 we talked about Shrove Tuesday and watched a video about it. Shrove Tuesday is when people used to confess their sins before Lent. Lent is the 7 weeks before Easter when you fast from something you have given up. Lent is a time to focus your mind on important things. Christians believe that this time is spent thinking about Jesus. Easter is then a time for celebration!
The 1st Day of March is called Ash Wednesday. This is the first day of LENT! Ash Wednesday is when Christians burn the old palm crosses from last year .
Most of us are having pancakes tonight when we get home!
In year 4, we talked about Pancake Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday. We understood that it was a way of using up everything in the cupboards that we may be giving up for lent. Some children in the class said they were giving up different things for lent and some children discussed things they might like to give up in the future and why. Mrs Arnold said that she used to do lent every year as a child but now she is a vegetarian, she feels that she gives up something all year round. We talked about how giving up things makes us all the more thankful for the things we have every day. Children agreed that Ash Wednesday followed Shrove Tuesday, this is the first day of lent.
We talked about the fact that it is important to focus on the things we have rather than the things we don’t have. We did however discuss the fact that sometimes, not having something is a good driving force to work hard to achieve it. That anything is possible.
We know that it’s St David’s day on 1st March and it’s a really important day for Welsh people.
2nd March is World Book day and we are excited to celebrate all things books! We can’t wait to dress up.
Year 5
We were excited about pancake day and many of us joined in with the Shrove Tuesday special pancake lunch. We discussed how we could combine our learning about Fair Trade and making pancakes at home by checking our ingredients and choosing fair trade sugar and flour.
We also discussed the positives that come out of choosing Fair Trade products when we do our weekly shopping and why or why not people may choose Fair Trade Products. We considered price, availability, visibility of the logo- so that we know which products are Fair Trade.
We were very excited about Shrove Tuesday as we knew this was the day that we celebrate the coming of Lent. We knew that this meant we use up our eggs, milk and flour to make pancakes. We know that Lent is the 40 days before we celebrate Easter. Usually we give up one of our favourite things during the 40 days of Lent to echo the sacrifice Jesus made of going without food or water in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights.
We linked Pancake Day to Shrove Tuesday by considering what Fair Trade products we could use when making pancakes. We also considered how we could spot Fair Trade products in the supermarket.
Year 3
St David’s Day was on the 1st of March, it is celebrated by Welsh people in Wales, Nathan wore a leek and daffodil to celebrate this special day. The next day we celebrated World Book Day, we all had a chance to dress up as a book character.
We also talked about celebrating Shrove Tuesday which is also known as Pancake Day. We shared our favourite toppings on pancakes. The children discussed what Lent was and talked about how lucky we were to have everything we need and that giving up something for Lent would remind us of others.
We shared the thought for the day from Martin Luther King -‘Before you finish eating your breakfast, you are depending on half of the world’ This reminds of how important Fairtrade products are and making sure they get a fair price for the produce they grow.
