  4. Year 3 says:

Year 3 talked about their goals for this year. Here are some of them:
    -learn my timestables
    -improve my concentration
    -be kinder to my friends
    -learn my spellings
We also thought about what excuses we make sometimes for not achieving our goals. Here are some of them:
-I forgot what my goal was!
    – I didn’t have time to practise
    – I was distracted by my friend
-It was too hard to achieve
In year 3, we are all looking forward to our new Ancient Greek topic on Gods and Mortals. We also talked about how the Roman God Janus reminded us of the end of the year 2016 and the beginning of 2017. We are all looking forward to what this year brings!

  5. YEAR ONE says:

Year 1 had lots of ideas about resolutions they have made for 2017.
Isla wants to improve her fitness. Milly wants to learn to swim a length. Demi wants to learn to ride her bike without stabilisers. Gracie wants to learn more words to improve her reading. Isla G wants to learn a new skill- Irish dancing. Ellis wants to get better at his numbers. Keeleigh wants to improve her handwriting. Megan wants to get better at phonics. Oliver wants to achieve his green belt at Karate. Charlie wants to get fit. Connor wants to ride a scooter with 2 wheels without falling off.
All the children agreed that they will need to practice lots and work hard showing determination to achieve their goals.

Lots of children said they were looking forward to holidays in 2017. Oliver can’t wait to go to a cottage in Cornwall and Adah said she was looking forward to going to the seaside with her cousins. Ellis is looking forward to celebrating his 6th birthday at Umberslade farm. James is really excited as he is moving to a new house very soon and will have a new bedroom.
The children enjoyed hearing about the Roman God Janus and thought it was funny that he had 2 heads one to look back on the old year and one to look ahead to the new year.

  6. s14cpayne says:

Year 2 enjoyed assembly this morning and we talked about New Year’s Resolutions. We heard how some people in the old days used to have their chimney cleaned because it brought good luck for the New Year. We also heard the story about the god Janus and how he had two faces – one looking back on what had happened and one looking forward to the new things coming. That’s what we have done this afternoon in Year 2.

In class we each shared some things we want to improve on in 2017. Some of the things we want to improve are times tables, cleaning our rooms, playing nicely, joining our handwriting, watching less tv (although this will be hard!) and reading more books! Even Miss Payne is going to read more books! It’s hard to keep resolutions because we forget and sometimes they are habits which are hard to stop – like biting our nails!

Epiphany is when the kings travelled to see Jesus. We don’t know if there were 3 kings. There might have been more! But there were definitely 3 gifts. We had them in our Nativity before Christmas. Some of us in Year 2 will be having special journeys in the summer to go on holiday and also to visit some family who live in other countries.

    Happy New Year everyone!

  7. Calum says:

Yes I remember that some people stay up untill midnight to celebrate new year.

    NEW YEAR
I remember that some people used to clean their chimneys and some people stay up until midnight to celebrate the new year.
My resolutions are to be more helpful around the house, stop biting my nails and being nicer to my brother.
I am looking forward to learning about new things at school and going on holiday with my mom then with my dad, dads girlfriend and brother.

    SUCCESS
People might forget their resolutions or they might be too difficult to do.
Janus had two faces, one of them was to look back on the past year and the other was to look on to the future and what would happen.
People thought it was lazy to not work even though it was the holiday.

  10. charlie year 6 says:

I enjoyed assembly when the powerpoint told us about different ways people celebrate new year and different times people celebrate new year.

I also thought of my new years resolution which is to help others and to keep going and not giving up when struggling with hard work.

The roman God Janus is to do with new year because he has two heads one on the left which means a new year and one on the right to look into the future of good things.

  11. Lily yr6 says:

    1. Some people in the oldays had their chimney sweeped as it brouht good luck for the new year.
My resolution is to excersise more and stop biting my nails.
I’m looking forward to going to secondary school and taking my SATS.
I think many people fail becase they can’t remember, they gave up, it was too hard or they are too busy.
Epiphany is when the Kings travelled to see Jesus in Bethlehem.
Janus had two faces. One for a beginning and one for an end like a new year!
The Kings folloed a bright star to see the baby King and they brought gifts of Gold, Frankinscence and Myrrh.
I am moving house next year to a new place so it will be interesting!

    5. For the New Year , i am planing to make lots of new friends and have a happy future

  15. Callista and lora says:

Why do you think so many people fail to keep their new year resolutions?= Me and Callista think that people fail them because so many people either forget them or come up with impossible resolutions so they cant do them.
What does the Roman God Janus have to do with New Year?= Janus has 2 heads because of new beginnings and ends of the year.

  16. Emily Jones yr6 says:

My new years resolutions are to stop biting my fingernails and to compliment my friends more often. I hope I can achieve these resolutions this year. I am looking forward to sats because at the ned you get a treat. I am also looking forward to going to condover and moving to my new secondary school, Tudor Grange.

People might fail their resolutions because maybe they didn’t make their resolutions clear. eg someone set their resolution to loose weight. To make it more specific you could say I am aiming to loose a stone every two weeks. They also might fail because they have set themselves tasks that are unrealistic and are impossible tyo do. eg a 7yr old girls sets themself a tack to lift a 20kg kettle bell. Janus has two heads and says that he looks back at the past year (2016) and looks forward at the new year a head (2017). The romans worked on the first day of the new year because they didn’t want to be lazy as it was the first day and it was a chance to turn over a new leaf for the year a head.

The three wise men visited jesus after his birth bringing bearing giftsa of gold, frankincense and myrr.

  19. owen yr6 says:

My New Years resolution is to reach my steps goal on my fitbit every day. I will have to do 10k steps every day to reach it.
in assembly we learnt that along time ago people gave each other branches of mistletoe on New Year’s day, back then they celebrated New Year on March 10th. Also they gave each other imprinted coins of janus who was named after January.
I am looking forward to spending all my christmas money.
Because they forget or can’t be bothered.
His one heads looks back at the past then the other head is looking into the future.

the roma god because one face is a new start the other face is the end

  21. David Smith Year 6 says:

A new year tradition that I heard in assembley was how people had to still work
even though its the new year. They had to clean their chimneys and open their doors
to let the bad spirits out. Cleaning the chimney means cleaning the bad thing in the last
    year out.

My new year resolution is to smile more at people and be happier with things I have achieved.

Im looking forward to go on a eight day trip on camp with my scout group.
What I’m looking forward to most is going to Condover.

Lots of people fail their new years resolution because they are too lazy, they forgot,
    their resolution was impossible.

Lily – Mae’s resolution is to try to stop biting her finger nails.
We are looking forward to the challenges ahead of us and having a new beginning so that we can try to achieve our goals.
    Success
We think they fail because they set themselves unachievable targets and some people forget what they are because the make them to simple.
The month January is named after the Roman God Janus and his two heads symbolise the end of the last year and the begining of the year ahead.
The Romans worked at least part of the day as if you didn’t it was considered laziness.
    Epiphany
The Epiphany is when the Wise men travelled to go and see Jesus in Bethlehem by following the star.
The Kings followed the star to Bethlehem but on the way back from the journey they went back a different way.

Year 4 celebrated New Year this year with their families by having parties or dinners, some children stayed up until midnight to see the fireworks in London on the television.

Mia’s resolution is to swim 40 lengths each time she goes swimming! Henry said he wanted to stop being lazy. Satra wants to be fitter in 2017. Amelie is going to try to keep her room tidy and Daniel plans to look at You Tube less. Today in class we also made a new year resolution for school.
