On Woolacombe beach there is a little river that leads down to the sea. I use my skimming on the river. It’s really fun. You can’t skim in the sea because it’s too deep.

    How are rivers used today?
Boats go on them to carry goods from place to place. People fish in rivers. River water can be boiled and used for drinking water. Some places use rivers for electric power by building dams. Also people like to do leisure activities on the river like canoeing, sailing, swimming and bird watching.

    What are the dangers?
Rivers can be very deep. The water can be flowing really fast. There may be strong currents. The river may have pollution in it. There could also be lots of sharp rocks. If the water is brown it might mean it is flooding and has had a lot of rain in it and may be rising.

How can rivers be a safe and fun place?
They can be safe if you are sensible and check what you are doing. It is good if the water is clear so you can see the bottom. It is good for children to be with an adult. It can be fun if you are careful and are doing activities that are safe.

    What happens on a river?
Lots of things can happen. People sail in boats. They go canoeing. They like to swim in the river. Fishermen sit on the edge of the river to catch fish.

Rivers are important because they support our wild life an our environment to support itself. The dangers are when you maybe fall into a river and the water is polluted by people throwing rubbish into the water that can cause harm to the wild life. Rivers can be a fun place to fish and to see different animals. We need to look after our rivers by keeping them clean and safe for everyone can enjoy.

I do not like going on boats on rivers because I get worried that the driver might accidentally crash into another boat or animals like ducks, swans or fish. Rivers are usually quite damaged or people might have thrown their litter in there if there was not any litter bins around in the area. On a river people go fishing which is what I do not understand why they do it. They catch fish or other creatures then put them back, I find this unpleasant because they are harming the creatures for no need, they didn’t hurt them so why would they hurt them?! Rivers can easily get polluted which effects how the animals in the rivers live, they get hurt, their homes get destroyed, the water the drink is dirty and they might find it hard to take care of their children.
