Charlie told us that fair trade means that the farmers are paid a fair price for the food they produce and sell to the buyers. Molly told us that fair trade is important as it means that families will have a better life and standard of living. They will be able to feed and provide shelter to their families. Flossie said that on the packaging you will see the fair trade logo or some writing to say the product is fair trade. Lots of children had a fair trade sticker on their banana at snack time.
Gracie said bananas are fair trade. Molly said tea and coffee beans. Charlie R said sugar. Neave said grapes. Gracie said peppers.
We talked about Build Back Fairer and decided that this means if we pay the farmers fairly then thye can use the money well to support their families and put some money too into making their farms better.
Year 1 are all going to buy fair trade food so we can support people in the countries we talked about to have better lives.

When we had the year 1/2 bubble during lockdown we celebrated World Fair Trade day and had a blind taste testing session with fair trade foods. We where surprised by how many foods there now is. We also enjoyed writing secret messages in white crayon and using brewed fair trade coffee to reveal them.

We learned about fair trade by watching video clips and sharing PowerPoints. As a class we now understand that fair trade means that farmers in poorer countries are paid a fair amount for the food they grow. This is important because it allows farmers to have a better quality of life and be paid fairly for all the hard work they do.

Lots of children in F2 recognised the fair trade logo on foods and said they had seen this logo in supermarkets and on food in their cupboards at home! We realised that we can continue to support fair trade by buying foods with the logo on their packaging.

  5. Year 4 says:

Year 4 knew lots about fair trade because they learnt all about it in year 3. They said it is when countries/ people are paid a fair amount of money for the products that we buy from them. It is important to be fair because people who grow these crops need money to live and therefore it is the right thing to do. Year 4 knew the fair trade logo and were able to tell me different products that they have seen in the shops which have the fair trade logo on them such as bananas, sugar and chocolate. We can support fair trade by purchasing products with the fair trade sticker on them.
