When you’re a bit older Ben, and if you are still into books about inspirational footballers I highly recommend a book called, ‘Trautman’s Journey’. It is a true story of the Manchester City 1956 FA Cup Final goalkeeper, Bert Trautman. He had been a German soldier in the Second World War, and had been captured by the British and put into a Prisoner of War army camp in England. Here he crafted his skill of goal keeping, and when he was released he stayed in England and began playing for a local team. Soon he was ‘spotted’ by Manchester City and went on to play for them.
He did something remarkable in the 1956 cup final, but I won’t tell you about it, because you may want to look it up yourself. But what I will say is that he was a remarkable man who did a great deal to heal English/German relations and was awarded an OBE medal for his services.
Wow – what a detailed and informative book review. Thanks Ben. Sounds like it is a must for all football fans!
