Hi Mrs Brown. I am doing creative writing about VE Day in a minute but I’m going to call my Papa because he was about 3 years old when he was evacuated and in my writing I’m going to put what he said in.
Hi year 5. I am planning to make cupcakes and have one with a cup of tea. I am also planning to take my elderly neighbours one each. I look forward to seeing your pictures of your cakes and reading your writing.
My Dad was 7 when the war started but he did not get evacuated. He had to go down to his local butchers shop, the butcher had made a shelter in his cellar by putting bunks along the walls, and this is where he stopped until the all clear alarm went off.
Like Zach’s papa he tells me stories about the war and how food was rationed. He once told me about the time they came back from the shelter late one evening and when he got into bed it felt lumpy. When he looked up he could see the sky through a hole in his ceiling and shouted for his Dad. It turned out to be rubble on his bed and he had to get out of it quickly incase the ceiling fell on him. His family had to move house the next day as it was unsafe to live there.
He also told me that a German plane crashed in Birmingham city centre, near to where the bull is now, and people threw money around it to support our soldiers.
I hope you have enjoyed my Dad’s stories as much as I do every time he tells me them.
My Mom and dad have been telling me stories about our family during WW2. My great Grandma worked in the Red Cross and her brother (Aubrey) was in the R.A.F. Aubrey was a wireless operator, he was part of several bombing missions over Germany. Aubrey’s plane was shot down on the 23rd of November 1943 and he sadly died. My Great Grandad was in the Navy during the War. My Great great Aunty Violet used to grow vegetables in her garden under the glass canopy from a Spitfire that had been shot down.
We have made some bunting for VE Day and we are planning to have a BBQ in the garden. I have enjoyed finding out more about how my family were involved in the war.
Hi Alex.Thank you for sharing that with us. Your family were very pro-active in the war and I was sad to hear your grandma’s brother died. I think lots of families lost loved ones so we will remember them tomorrow at 11am when we have a minute silence for them.
Hi Millie. I’m glad you enjoyed researching and writing facts about VE day. I look forward to reading it.
I baked cupcakes and took them to my elderly neighbours, on VE day, and sat and had a cup of tea with one of them. She chatted about how things were when the war was taking place and she was a child having to live on rations. I think the cakes reminded her of how lucky we are now to have such lovely food.
