This morning Matilda has written her mini beast poem. We read the poem on the blog and wrote down the rhyming words and then added our own rhyming words before putting them together for our poem. Here is the finished result!
One day I went to hunt for mini beasts,
I went for a walk in the East.
With me I took a book,
It helped me to look.
I saw a mountain of soil,
Hiding in there was a wood louse, it’s back was as shiny as foil.
I walked past some trees,
There were some ants munching on the leaves.
I saw a worm wriggling and jiggling,
I couldn’t stop giggling.
A beautiful butterfly flew by,
It was very high in the sky.
I came across a spider spinning a web,
I stopped to count his eight legs.
Perhaps now it was time to go home for a snack,
But I can’t wait to come back!
I have been on a minibeast hunt in my garden. I found lots of ants and woodlouse. I also saw a ladybird, a bee, two snails and and two slugs. We had to look underneath rocks and plantpots because minibeasts like to hide from predators.
Ooh a good hunt then Ben. Hope you had fun on it. Perhaps if you do another one tomorrow you can see how many you can find and compare with today. Well done for looking in all of the right places!
Poppy read the minibeast poem today and wrote down the rhyming words she could see. We then spoke about other rhyming words she wanted to add in her poem. We wrote the poem and Poppy then typed it up on the computer and added some pictures to it.
We have also been on a minibeast hunt in our garden, we saw a bee on our blueberry bush, a few ants that came from under the patio, 5 woodlouse under the edge of the grass, a big spider under our logpile and a worm in the soil. Poppy said, “the bee was on the blueberry bush to get the pollen for food. The ants live underground to keep themselves safe from predators. The woodlouse live in dark damp places and eat rotting wood and plants. The spider hides in the log pile and has made a web to catch its prey. The spider knows its caught prey when the web vibrates and then comes out to get it. A worm lives in the soil where it can find food like dead leaves.
That is great! I can’t wait to read the poem. You found lots of minibeasts on your hunt. Well done. It’s great that you are thinking about why minibeasts live in certain places (microhabitats).
Me and my brother wrote a song and performed it to mummy
“Minibeasts”
There are lots of minibeasts flying around
crunching and crawling and buzzing about
eating and racing and seeing their mates
ready for winter to hibernate.
Well, that’s the end of the minibeast day
go to your garden and hunt for them
see how many minibeasts you can find
then go and show them to your beautiful mum!
THE END
I absolutely love that you wrote a song and performed it your mummy. I bet she was super proud. You can perform it to the class when we are back at school.
Sorry Alex, that one was meant for Poppy-Mai, one of these days I’ll get to grips with technology!
In the meantime I’ll look forward to hearing your song.

This morning Matilda has completed the mystery of the squashed fruit. She found that the person who squashed the fruit was Grace. She has also made a poster to show what she found on her minibeast hunt and where she found them.
What wonderful work you are doing, the poems made me smile. I wonder if the wet weather will bring more minibeasts out or do you think they like the sunshine better?
Super impressed, well done everyone.
Mrs Evans
We have been on the minibeast hunt in the rain. We found 43 snails, 11 slugs and 2 worms. We have also made some minibeasts from recycling materials. The big bumblebee glows in the dark! It is so cool.
Wow Alex that was a good minibeasts hunt. Do you think they came out because of the rain? Your bumblebee sounds amazing, you will have to bring it in to show everyone when we get back to school.
Well done!
Mrs Evans
Oh wow Alex that was a lot of snails to find. Was it a wet day because they like to come out when it is raining?
Ooh I’d love to have a photo of your bee to put on our photo blog.
What is a microhabitat?
A microhabitat is a small scale specific habitat which supports the survival of certain animals or plants for instance a rockpool or a rotting log.
Some minibeasts live in different habitats
Caterpillars like to live on top and underneath leaves. Caterpillars are green so they can camouflage.
and this week i’m going for a hunt for minibeasts and there habitats

Poppy-Mai, you’d make a great Wildlife Presenter on ‘Spring Watch’!
Sorry Alex, that one was meant for Poppy-Mai, one of these days I’ll get to grips with technology!

There was a stag beetle and he lived in a whole
His next door neighbour was a mole.
Next to the mole lived a worm, the worm and the stag beetle were very good buddies. Sometimes they wore matching hoodies.
They liked to eat the same leaves and flowers
at the same hours, it gave them special powers.
Have you ever seen a mole hill Edward?
This poem really cheered up this rainy day. Thank you Edward.
Remember that beetles live in a โholeโ though.

Well done Georgia.
This is my poem called The Mini-beast Tea Party by Matthew Russell
A beetle crawled under a magical door,
Where he saw a herd of mini-beasts scuttling along the garden floor.
The ladybirds, caterpillars and ants
were all wearing fancy pants,
The earwigs, spiders and butterflies
All wore stripy ties.
They all sat down for the feast
Which included some juicy flies.
The beetle had to go home feeling very sad
He was having so much fun
As he nibbled on a current bun.
This is amazing! We could make a book of all of these amazing minibeast poems!
Absolutely brilliant Matthew – I love the title.
Georgia minibeast poem
I’m walking to the forest to look for some minibeasts.
When i was walking in the forest i saw two caterpillars chatting in a tree.
Walking through the forest i saw a ladybird flying high in the sky.
I jogged through the forest and saw a woodlies wiggling on its back.
Then i saw a spider singing on its web.
A lovely poem – really well done Georgia. I enjoyed reading it.
Thank you mrs Mitchell.
i’ve also done all my mini beast question in my folder
thanks you mrs Mitchell.
I’ve also finished my mini beasts question in my folder.
I’m super proud of how hard you are working Georgia. Keep it up.
I love this Mathew, this sounds like it’s something Enid Blyton or Kenneth Grahame (author of Wind in the Willows) would have been proud of.
