Dexter can remember learning about Rosa Parks. When she got on the bus the driver told her to sit at the back because of the colour of her skin. She thought it was unfair so she decided to stay in her seat at the front of the bus. She went to jail because of this. But because of her bravery the rules changed and black and white people could sit together.

Caleb liked the information about Benjamin Zephaniah and that he was born in Birmingham. He is famous because he write poetry and stories. Miss Payne remembers meeting him a few years ago and he read one of his poems to a room full of teachers!

Black History months is important because it makes us remember that black people, white people, brown people and other people that are part of our world ALL have an important role to play (Sebastian). Nobody is more important than someone else just because of their skin colour. We are all the same.

We should always include others in everything we do at school. Nathan, Amelia, Riley and Oscar all said some good strategies for standing up to people who treats others badly. TELL SOMEONE. Stand up to the bully.

    Year 6:
What happens during Black History Month?
People praise and think about the important things that some black people have done for society. We learnt about Rosa Parks and how brave she was to challenge the views that were in society then.

Why do you think Black History Month is so important?
It is important to remind ourselves that everyone is the same no matter what their skin colour and we should all be treated equally. We should be appreciated for what we do no matter what gender, race, etc.
If those people didn’t do those brave things, then things may still be the same now which would be a horrible society to live in.

We spoke about how important Black African history is because of how black people were treated in the past. We spoke about people like Rosa Parks who stood up for what she believed in, Martin Luther King who worked hard on his vision for the future and Barack Obama who made history as the first black president after the history of slavery which took place in America.

We spoke at length about the racism which took place at the football match last night and the children couldn’t believe the behavior of some of the fans. The children were keen to know what the punishment from the FA would be for those fans involved.

Year 2 really enjoyed the assembly about Black History Month. They said it is a special time to remember the achievements of people past and present. It is a time to remember that we are all equal and we are all special. We talked a lot about Rosa Parks and year 2 could not believe how black people have been treated in the past. It is sad that some people nowadays still do not treat people as equal. Rosa Parks stood up for equal rights and she was extremely brave.
