Year 6:
What is harvest?
Harvest is when all the crops that you’ve been growing all year get cut and prepared for people to eat.
What is a harvest festival?
This is where farmers harvest food and we bring along any of our food to share with other people who need it.
Do you know any vegetables and fruit that we harvest in this country?
Potatoes, cauliflower, beans, apples and tea.
Year 6 discussed how we can harvest our food and there are different options such as by hand or by machinery. Farmers use machines such as combine harvesters for this.
Foundation talked a lot about the Harvest. Molly Bratt stood up and told us all about how the farmers harvest their crops this time of year and how churches hold celebrations this time of year to thank God for the good harvest.
Alot of the children knew that you harvest carrots and onions but Lois told us how we can harvest potatoes and broccoli too. We talked about the fruit trees like Apples and pears that need to be picked too this time of year. Flossie told us how she enjoys picking blackberries this time of year for Apple and blackberry crumble.
Mrs Norris told us how farmers in the UK also harvest wheat, corn and oats. Molly G told us how you need a combine harvester or a tractor to harvest our food.
Sebby told us that harvest is when the farmers gather the fruit and vegetables ready for them to be taken to the shops for us to buy. Maya told us that a harvest festival is when we join together to celebrate and say thank you to God for all the crops that have been grown and safely gathered in. Holly said it is a time to be grateful and thankful for the food we eat. Orla said that its a chance for us to collect food and give to charities that help people and families who don’t have enough food to eat.
Year 1 had a great discussion about the fruits that we harvest in this country. Holly said her Nan and grandad grow turnips, carrots, potatoes and lettuce. Sebby said that his Nan and Grandad grow lettuce, radishes, beetroot, broad beans, sprouts and carrots. Gwen said that she grows blueberries and tomatoes. Orla said that we also grow apples, pears, peas and courgettes in our country. Hollie said that pumpkins grow here too.
Alfie told us we harvest our food by picking it ourselves and that some farms use tractors, combine harvesters and special machinery to gather the crops.
Year 1 and 2 are learning a Harvest Samba to sing to the school in our Harvest festival celebration. We are all going to remember to bring some foods into school to help people who are not as fortunate as ourselves.
Year 2
We talked about Harvest and talked about the vegetables we grow in this country. We talked about the apples, pears, plums and strawberries we grow in our back garden. Some of us grow potatoes in our back garden.
We are collecting food for our Harvest Festival and some of us have bought some food in already for our display. Cheswick Green will be celebrating Harvest next Thursday so we are learning a song to share in assembly.
Harvest Time is a time to remember how lucky we are because we have plenty of food to eat but some of us are not so lucky and do not have enough food to eat. We bring in food to give to the charity Helping hands so that they can give the food to less fortunate than us.
In Year 3 this week we have been busy practicing our poem for the HARVEST assembly next week. We are learning the poem by heart! We want to share it, we hope you like it!
We have talked about what we are thankful for, who we say thanks to for different things – including God and our parents and also what the word grateful means! A lot of us have been very generous and have brought in food for the ‘Helping Hands’ charity that we support. We are thankful for the best school EVER! We love coming here and learning.
