In assembly we listened to the story about Kevin and we decided to talk about why Kevin found it hard to let go. Riley said maybe Kevin thought he was going to be pushed around by the other animals. Anaya said he liked his tree because it was home and home is a comfortable place to be.
When the bird came and pecked his tree Kevin fell out says Charlie. After he was out of the tree he felt happy, springy, light and BOLD said Demi.
Changes that we find hard in Year 2 are; changing subjects at school for Demi, growing up for Charlie, changing classes and getting older for Riley, Alice says moving schools is hard because you have to make new friends and sometimes they bully you.
Jacob explained that going to Year 3 will be a change but we can all prepare before. Jacob will get ready for Year 3 by getting a new uniform, pencil case, new shoes, bigger pumps for PE. Over the summer year 2 are going to get ready by practicing their times tables on TT RockStars!
Life can be good if you try something NEW!
Foundation enjoyed the story of Kevin the Koala. We enjoyed discussing why Kevin found it so hard to come down the tree. Finley suggested it was because it was so high, Elliot thought it was because he had never done it before, Madison said that it was because the tree was his home and Charlie Thomas suggested it was because the other animals might eat him.
Max said the woodpeckers where attacking the tree and thats why Kevin had to come down the tree.
Elliot said that Kevin was happy when he got down as he realised that he liked being down the tree.
Charlie Thomas said moving house was very difficult but he realised he could have fun at his new house. Mostly foundation talked about how scary it is moving to Year 1 but we said that the best thing was to talk about it with our teachers because they could talk to us about the exciting things we will do and can expect in year 1.
Year 1 loved the story of the koala who could not let go of his tree. Maisie said he wouldn’t let go because it was his home and he felt safe there. Ellie thought he was scared and wouldn’t let go. Imogen said that you always feel safe in places you know well. Sebastian said he was high up and away from the noise below him.
Dexter told us that a woodpecker was tapping the tree and the tree was going to fall down so the koala needed to get away. After he let go the children said it wasn’t as bad as he thought it was going to be. It was quieter and he wanted to join in with the other animals.
Ava said she felt scared and afraid of the change when she left Foundation 2 and moved into year 1. She said after a while she got used to everything and said it was fine.
Ellie said she had been upset when they moved house earlier this year and didn’t want to leave her own house but she loves her new house now. Sebastian wasn’t sure when he had a new puppy until he got used to him.
We talked about how we could prepare for moving on to year 2. Caleb said that meeting the teachers before was a great idea. Olivia said it would be a good idea to visit the new classroom. Lee said if you went in the new classroom you could find out where things were kept. Toby said asking questions was a good way of finding out all about year 2 and finally Sophie said that it would help to find out about the work especially the new topics.
The Koala found it hard to let go because he was used to it. However, you always need to try new things.
He had to let go eventually because the tree was about to get knocked down.
After he let go, the Koala felt better and happier. He felt as though he fit in more.
The message was change scary but it can work out for the better and it is part of life.
Here are some types of change we find difficult:
– going to secondary school
– moving house
– growing up
– death
– if your parents split up
You can prepare for change by:
– asking questions
– ask for help in preparing yourself
– think of the positive parts of change
– take it in stages e.g. ease yourself in
– just get on with it
– talk about your worries
– try new things more often
Year 5 says:
Why do you think the Koala found it so hard to let go?
We think it was because if he jumped down he may get bullied because he wasn’t like the others and wasn’t as fast. Also, he didn’t want anything to be different, he wanted his life to be the same every day.
Why did he have to let go eventually?
Because the tree broke and it would make him face his fears by jumping down.
How did Koala feel after he let go?
He felt happy because he had faced his fears and the others were all being nice to him. He also felt relieved and glad that he had come down because he was more involved with the others.
It was very difficult for Koala to accept change.
What kinds of change do you find difficult?
Missing friends/falling out with friends, moving house, changing year groups or schools, getting a new job or losing family members or pets.
How can you help yourself prepare for change?
Talk about it, visit new places, asking questions, seeing if anybody else has similar worries.

I think why koala did not let go of the tree because he was scared to try something new and his friends were saying ” come down koala come on.
