Why did the Prince’s father ask the wise man to take his son away?
Because his son wasn’t very fair to anybody and he always went by their looks. The Prince’s father wanted his son to change how he felt about other people.
What did the Prince learn from his time away?
He learnt justice and fairness because at the very first part they got shipwrecked on a desert island and the Prince caught a fish. The wise man asked if he could have some fish, but the Prince said no. Soon, the fish were running out and the wiseman managed to catch a lot of birds. Then the Prince got skinnier and he kept asking the wiseman for some bird and he said no. After, the wiseman waited until the Prince begged him and asked him what he’d learnt and he said he had learnt that it is good to share.
Who helped the Prince to learn these things?
The wiseman and the maximums and minimums.
In Year 2 we learnt about Prince Lapio who wasn’t very good at sharing so the wise man had to take him away until he learnt his lesson. He then had to sort out some problems for himself and he had learnt how to be fair to people so they had the best chance. Miss Payne talked about how this is showing fairness and compassion to others. Sometimes things in our lives are not fair but it shouldn’t stop us from trying our best and aiming for success. We should always try and be fair, like when we play outside on the playground. When we make up games and play together.
We like the pictures above because they show us clearly what equity is. If the farmer fed all the animals the same the larger animals would be hungry because their bodies are bigger and need more food.
Also in the Olympics when people are racing they start at different places on the track because the inside of the track is shorter than the outside! Its better if everyone gets a fair chance.
The children listened carefully to the story and with a little support and discussion could recall the key points.
The children decided that Prince Lapio was unkind and unjust and they thought that his Father helped him to become kinder. We talked about how he got food when he was stranded on the island as there were no shops to go to. The children thought he had learned his lesson when the wise man did not share the birds that he had caught, causing the Prince to nearly die. The children were keen to talk about what is fair and unfair, especially as we had been learning about halving this afternoon!

For example, the sunflowers started at different heights because the smaller sunflower needed more height and this is fair because now they all have what they need whereas if they started at the same height then the smallest one couldn’t reach the light.
We believed that equity is treating people fairly but not necissarily the same. During the story the prince was taught a lesson by his father about treating people equally. We thought that he choose to do this because the prince wasnt treating his subjects fairly. Eventually the prince is taught by the wiseman to share fairly and treat people with equity, but as a class we believed that this lesson was taught by all of the characters in the story and not just the wise man (they all helped in different ways).

Imogen said his father wanted to teach him the importance of treating people well so that he would be liked and he would understand fairness.
On the island Prince Lapio learned the importance of sharing. Lee reminded us that when he caught a fish he refused to share it with the wise old man however when the fishes ran out and the wise man had lots of birds to keep him fed, he said he would not share even though the Prince was starving. Finally after begging the wise old man to give him food, the wise old man agreed if he could tell him what lesson he had learnt. Price Lapio said that he now knew how important it was to share and he would always remember this in future.
Nathan said it was the wise man that taught Prince Lapio about fairness and sharing. We shared out the fruit fairly at breaktime and talked about how we must be fair to others.
